Pema Raka Orange-Brown Carmelian Rough Chunks, Lapis Lazuli Discs w/Rare Ancient Roman Glass Beads restrung on Sterling Silver with added Sterling Spacers. This necklace brings pieces that can date as far back to the 1st-4th Century for example: Bicone Carnelian Beads that are known for for their translucent to opaque reddish hue in the large barrel shape found here. The surfaces show genuine authenticity with the matte imperfect gemstones & weathered patina that can only come from time. Roman's attributed this stone to courage, mental power & physical vitality. Lapis Lazuli though more common in Egypt & Mesopotamia, it was also used in Rome at the same time time as a symbol of royalty, wisdom, & truth. The lapis used for many types of roman pieces were disc shaped or rough cut like the Carnelian. Roman beads were made or with roman glass fragments, ancient vessels, like cups Vases & perfume bottles. Roman glass jewelry was not only beautiful but also carried symbolic and cultural significance. Glass was considered a luxurious material, and wearing glass jewelry was a way to display wealth and status. Additionally, certain colors and designs held specific meanings & some colors were more valuable then others. Colbalt blue was the most expensive to produce, opaque red was rare & mosiac beads with one or more colors showed advanced techniques that were way ahead of the times. These gems and glass beads were restrung usually on sterling silver such as this one. The size of the holes, weathered patina, inclusions & other clues are markers for true authenticity of the age of the gems and their origins. This & other pieces of the same creation are more then a piece of beautiful jewelry but a connection with thousands and thousands of years ago, proving gemstones & jewelry have long been a part of history.
