A beautiful and authentic example of Victorian "Grand Period" jewelry (circa 1860–1880). This oval brooch features a classical rope-twist border framing a striking central cross motif. The cross is decorated with black taille-d'épargne enamel tracery—a popular 19th-century technique—and is set with a deep red, faceted natural garnet.Historical Context:This style is characteristic of Victorian mourning or sentimental jewelry. The combination of gold and black enamel was a fashionable way to express piety or remembrance during the decades following the death of Prince Albert.Construction & Details:Era: Victorian, late 19th Century.Materials: Gold-filled/rolled gold over base metal; genuine red garnet (tested).Design: Ornate fleur-de-lis style cross with black enamel inlay.Hardware: Features the original period-correct tube hinge and an elongated pin that secures into a traditional "C" clasp.Secure pin is bent and a little loose but overall the brooch is in very good condition.Markings: No maker’s marks, as was standard for many artisanal gold-filled pieces of this era.
