Anderson Jacobson Model A 242A Acoustic Data CouplerHere's a rare piece of Silicon Valley history that's getting harder to find — an early computer modem that allowed data transmission by 'coupling' — physically nesting a standard telephone handset into rubber cups. We all remember that banshee screech tone, followed by warbling chirps and buzzing as your system completed a digital handshake with your favorite BBS. Includes a standard 25-pin EIA/TTY (RS-232) serial port on the rear.Manufactured by premium brand Anderson Jacobson (San Jose, California), this unit includes original documentation:Quality Control Tag: Dated: Oct. 24, 1980 (on cord, attached with twine)Handset Use Tag: "Insert Firmly | Roll to Remove" (on cord, attached with twine)Shipping Sticker: Hand Dated: Nov. 24, 1980 (sticker pasted on bottom)Functional Status: Unit successfully powers on; the "Power" indicator light illuminates immediately when switched. Not tested for data transmission. Due to my inability to fully test, this item is sold 'as is' for parts, repair, or as a display-quality piece.Physical Condition: This vintage unit exhibits some age-related wear. While capturing every potential flaw is not possible, I've highlighted the most notable below. Please review all photos to assess the physical condition of this iconic piece.Outer Casing: Minor dust, dirt, and discoloration, including dark scuffs on the front-right side. The woodgrain metal control plate has some minor bending on the right side.Acoustic Handset Cups: Remain intact and pliable, though they show some lightening and discoloration toward the outer edges.Power Cord: Remains pliable though hardened with age and shows two cracks—one near the plug exposing internal insulation and a smaller hairline crack a few inches higher. The brass plug metal shows some tarnishing.Factory Tags: Some scuffs that partially obscure the "Handset" instruction text on one side.Bottom: Some discoloration spots; all 4 rubber feet are intact.Shipping: Items are carefully packed — with ample padding — to survive shipping.
