Waiting for Dolphins Description IMPORTANT: condition descriptions provided by eBay in their 'item specifics' template shown above my listings are likely incorrect due to limitations of the software listing program. MOST of my books are either VERY GOOD or GOOD condition. From School Library Journal Grade 6-8-After her father drowns while helping to bring a sailboat to the States, Molly feels that it's her mission to continue sailing Emerald Eyes through the Caribbean. She knows that her mother wants to abandon their life at sea to resume an ordinary life on Long Island. Now in port, with reports of an impending storm the main topic of conversation, Molly dreams of sailing to Venezuela alone on her beloved boat. She harbors silent secrets about what she believes to be her role in her father's death. He wanted to take her along on that fateful night, and to Molly's relief, her mother said no. Now, thinking about his alcoholism, she wonders if she might have been able to save him, and is haunted by guilt. Contributing to her rocky relationship with her mother is her interest in Christopher, an older boy who carries his own chest of secrets. Not so subtly masked is the probability that he is involved in drug smuggling. Christopher's overt interest in Molly and his daredevil ways spark her own quest for excitement. Looming in the background is the constant threat from the tropical storm. For a girl who's supposedly well experienced at sea, Molly's disregard for the storm shakes the credibility of this story. The impending hurricane that threatens from the beginning takes too long to strike and Molly's battle of the wills with her mother brews beyond the point of empathy.Alison Follos, North Country School, Lake Placid, NY Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. Read more From Booklist Molly is plagued by guilt for not going with her father on the boat from which he was thrown and killed. Still living on their own boat, Emerald Eyes, Molly and her mother, who are nothing alike, find their relationship further strained by their mourning and by the sudden intimacy developing between Molly's mother and one of her father's best friends. When her mother demands that they abandon Emerald Eyes to take cover from an approaching hurricane, Molly determines to save the boat and, she hopes, the loving memories of her father. Crowe is an excellent writer. She advances the plot steadily and believably and keeps readers engaged by ending each chapter with either an unexpected turn of events or an insightful hook. Although Molly's attempt to save the boat becomes the major focus of the story, her struggle to reconcile her guilt and eventually resolve the conflict with her mother are deftly developed and resolved.
