Clemens Holzmeister, Das Architektonische Werk; Vol. I: Werke fur das Theater Clemens Holzmeister's theatre works offer a clue to the whole of his architectural creative art. Already by descent connected with the stage his special affection belongs to it, and he always returned to it after the periods of his earnest religious art and after his monumental profane architecture. In his art the romanticism of the stage forms the metaphysical counterpart to architecture. This art having often been called "music turned to stone". Holzmeister's creative art could be called architecture redeemed and "turned to acting".It is significant that the town of Mozart has become the centrc for this "acted architecture". Holzmeister was destined to create a home for the Salzburg Festival in his Festival Theatre, and he was further destined to set the stage for the two greatest works of dramatic art in this theatre. Holzmeister built the "Town of Faust" in 1933 and the "Town of Don Giovanni" in 1953 - two tasks of such eminence and dignity such as no other scenic artist of modern times had mastered before him. In the course of the 20 years between the two great tasks he fought a hard struggle to realize the cherished idea of his life-time: the revival of the architectural stage. Many a scenic artist had preceded him in these endeavours -but the central idea culminates in the realization of a new theatre, an "ideal theatre" as he calls it, serving for performances of the greatest achievements of dramatic poetry and music. His projects bear the names of many a place, yet he concentrates his interest also in this aspect on Salzburg whose innate theatre never ceased to inspire the artist.The aim of this book is to explain this great creative evolution by picture and word and to prove how assuredly the artist followed the road which originated from the sparkling days of baroque theatre and leads up to the troublesome yet rich days of Clemens Holzmeister's art.
