Vintage San Francisco Giants spring training ticket stub from March 16, 1992 vs the California Angels. This is the game where Matt Keough got hit in the head by a line drive that ended his career and almost killed him.Keough hadn't pitched in the majors since 1986 and was attempting a comeback. He was sitting in the third-base dugout when leadoff hitter John Patterson hit a foul line drive off starting pitcher Don Robinson. The ball hit Keough square in the right temple and he collapsed. The game was stopped for 20 minutes while he was tended to, and he was then rushed off to hospital where they performed an emergency craniotomy to relieve pressure from a blood clot caused by the impact. The injury ended his career as a player and it had lingering effects for the rest of his life.The dugouts at Scottsdale Stadium were known to be dangerously exposed and Keough actually had his glove with him but hadn't put it on yet, presumably because it was so early into the game. In an interview after the incident he recalls reflexively putting his hands up and feeling the ball touch his thumb and index finger. Buck Rodgers, manager for the Angels described it as follows: "It was awful. It sounded like it hit a squash."This ticket has been authenticated, graded & encapsulated by PSA (Cert #166430952). Grade is PSA 8 NM-MT. This is the only example of this ticket in the PSA Population Report.
