Vintage Los Angeles Dodgers ticket stub from April 13, 1993 vs the St. Louis Cardinals. Lee Smith recorded his 358th save in this game, passing Jeff Reardon for the all-time saves record at the time. Smith remained the saves leader for 13 years (finishing his career with 478) until he was passed by Trevor Hoffman in 2006.Also notable is that a rookie Pedro Martínez gave up his first home run in this, his 4th career game. But that's not all: the home run itself was controversial, and was hit by a player who was famously almost late to the game! The story goes like this: Cardinals pinch-hitter Gerald Perry mistakenly thought they were playing a night game, and was back in his hotel room eating room service and watching The Bodyguard when a Cardinals employee came knocking to tell him he was late to what was, in fact, the Dodgers afternoon season opener. He rushes over to the stadium, makes it into the game, and in the top of the 7th Perry pinch hits for Les Lancaster and launches one deep down the right-field line. Darryl Strawberry goes for it at the wall, but a fan stuck his own glove out and caught the ball, leading Strawberry to claim that the fan interfered with the play. Legend says the fan was ejected from the game, but my research indicates that he was moved by security to a safer seat as some frustrated fans were throwing things and hollering at him. It's a pretty neat story for Pedro's first surrendered home run. This ticket has been authenticated, graded & encapsulated by PSA (Cert #176208149). Grade is PSA 4 VG-EX. This is the only example of this ticket in the PSA Population Report as of October 6, 2026.
