This little booklet introduced the world to May Gibbs’ iconic gumnut babies, the characters that would go on to become Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and one of the most beloved and enduring pieces of Australian folklore. It sold out almost immediately on release, which is why surviving copies from this earliest printing are genuinely hard to find.This copy retains its original brown paper wrappers with the colour pictorial onlay to the front cover and May Gibbs’ distinctive hand-lettered “Gum-Nut Babies” title beneath it, held with the original cord binding. Inside: colour frontispiece plus a run of sepia-toned full-page illustrations throughout, printed by The H. & H. Printing Co., Sussex Street, Sydney.There’s a lovely piece of provenance too — an early owner’s inscription inside reading “Ray Stannard, North Perth,” tying the book back to the very region (Perth/WA) where May Gibbs herself grew up and first drew inspiration from the bush.Condition: Given its age (over 100 years old), please view all photos closely. The original wrappers show wear and chipping to the board edges as expected for this fragile format — this was always a cheaply-produced, ephemeral booklet, not built to last. The text block and plates inside are clean and complete with no loss. Sold as-is per photos; please ask any questions before bidding/buying.A note on authentication: I believe this to be the true 1916 first printing based on physical characteristics, but Gum-Nut Babies was reprinted numerous times through 1920 in a very similar format, so I’d encourage anyone with specialist bibliographic knowledge to review the photos and reach out with questions. Priced and described in good faith.
