The first photo is just an example of a potential size gourd if grown properly. You'll receive 20 seeds. To grow bottle gourds successfully, you need plenty of sunlight, warm weather, and a strong trellis for the heavy vines. Choose a spot that gets 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Use well-draining, rich soil mixed with plenty of organic compost. Soak the hard seeds in water for 24 hours before planting to speed up germination. Plant seeds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep directly into the ground or in large pots. Keep plants 3 to 4 feet apart, as the vines spread aggressively. Set up a sturdy fence, net, or wooden trellis. Lifting the vines keeps the heavy gourds off the damp ground, preventing rot and keeping them straight. Water deeply at the base of the plant to keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Pinch off the tips of the main vines once they reach about 8 feet long to force the plant to grow side branches, which produce more female flowers. Bottle gourd flowers open at night. If you do not see bees, use a small paintbrush to gently transfer pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers (which have a tiny gourd shape at their base). Cut the gourds from the vine using garden shears while they are still young, tender, and green (usually 50–70 days after planting). If they turn yellow and woody, they will become bitter and inedible.
