Spottiswoode, New-Street-Square A beautifully preserved mid-Victorian antiquarian treasure collecting the complete poetry and verse of Oliver Goldsmith, prefaced with an extended biographical memoir. This premium 1845 London printing is sumptuously bound in full period leather, featuring highly detailed geometric gilt-tooled borders, intricate spine gilding, matching marbled endpapers, inner edge dentelles, and full bright gilt page edges. Richly illustrated throughout with delicate period wood engravings designed by members of the historic Etching Club. HISTORICAL PROVENANCE: The front blank flyleaf features two distinct generations of handwritten family gift inscriptions tracking this specific volume's journey across nearly a century: 1. An early Victorian ink presentation dated December 6th, 1848 ("H. L. Morse from O. W. & A. Holmes"). 2. A later fountain pen hand addition dated 1936 ("Mary Lee from J. S. Morse"). CONDITION: Good antiquarian condition. Internally, the volume is exceptionally clean—the internal text block is tight, and the pages are remarkably bright and free from the heavy foxing, water staining, or dampness blemishes common to this era. The marbled endpapers remain securely attached at the joints. The exterior binding is structurally intact, though the fine period leather exhibits characteristic age-wear, including visible cosmetic flaking, scraping, and raw surface layer chipping along the spine hinges and corner tips (fully documented in accompanying listing photos).
