A modernist masterpiece of book design. This 1939 first edition of “Fit For a King” is as much an art piece as it is a cookbook. Designed by the legendary Merle Armitage, it features bold typography and stunning illustrations by Elise.This volume includes contributions from literary giants like Gertrude Stein and Louis Untermeyer. It also features a unique provenance stamp from "Chessmen Productions Ltd." of Oklahoma City on the front flyleaf.Condition Notes:• Binding: Poor to Fair. The spine is fraying significantly and beginning to separate from the front and back boards. It remains attached but requires careful handling.• Cover: Wear to the cloth, bumped corners, and some surface staining.• Interior: Generally clean and bright. The modernist layouts and red-and-black typography are still crisp.• Jacket: Missing.Note: Merle Armitage once said that a book should be a "joy to the eye." While the spine of this copy has clearly seen more "joy" than it could handle over the last 80+ years, the interior remains a graphic design triumph. It's the perfect "shelf-filler" for a collector who values the soul of the book over a perfect exterior.
