(Brookneal, VA)Up for sale is a wonderful piece of mid-century regional Virginia advertising and paper ephemera: a mechanical, multi-panel pull-out cardboard hand fan manufactured by the historic The Thos. D. Murphy Co. of Red Oak, Iowa. When fully closed, the fan compactly displays a vibrant lithograph of the famous painting "Christ at the Age of Twelve" (Christ in the Temple) by German artist Heinrich Hofmann. When swung open via its metal rivets, three individual blades expand to complete the full scene of young Jesus teaching the elders.Item Highlights:Sponsor: Compliments of Brookneal Motor Co., an early regional Ford dealership located in Brookneal, Virginia.Manufacturer: Marked "The Thos. D. Murphy Co. — Red Oak, Iowa" (the historic birthplace of the art calendar advertising industry). Also stamped "Pat. Applied For SKC".Unique Local Provenance: Features authentic vintage pencil handwriting on the reverse from a previous owner, reading "Elizabeth Hosmer, Crystal Hill, Va." (located roughly 20 miles south of the dealership in Halifax County).Condition Details:The fan expands nicely and the lithograph colors remain bright and beautiful. We are missing 1 pull tab!The original rubber band tension loop is no longer present (common for paper items of this age).Light edge and corner wear from storage and handling over the decades.Reverse side features the aforementioned handwritten name/location in pencil (please see photos for exact condition). This is a fantastic cross-collectible piece perfect for collectors of vintage automotive advertising, Ford dealership history, Virginia ephemera, or unique mid-century mechanical fans.Shipping: Will be packaged securely between rigid cardboard layers to prevent bending or creasing during transit.
