It is a gritty, philosophical urban fantasy set in post-Soviet Moscow, where a tenuous truce keeps the peace between Light and Dark. If Day Watch is the view from the shadows, Night Watch (Nochnoy Dozor) is the gritty, rain-slicked introduction to the world. Published in 1998, its the book that launched Sergei Lukyanenko to international fame and redefined urban fantasy by ditching the "shining knights" trope for something much more cynical and human. The Core Premise In Lukyanenkos world, a small percentage of humans are "Others"beings who can step into the Twilight, a shadowy parallel dimension that feeds on human emotions. Others are divided into two camps: The Light Others: Magicians and healers who believe in self-sacrifice, order, and the "greater good." The Dark Others: Vampires, witches, and shape-shifters who believe in absolute individual freedom and following ones desires. Centuries ago, after a bloody battle that nearly destroyed both sides, they signed The Great Treaty. To ensure neither side gains the upper hand, they formed the Watches: the Light Others monitor the Dark (the Night Watch), and the Dark Others monitor the Light (the Day Watch).
