The Essence of The Oscar Wilde Reader The Oscar Wilde Reader is a curated gateway into the mind of Victorian England's most celebrated wit. Rather than being just a single book, "Reader" editions are comprehensive anthologies designed to showcase Wildes incredible rangemoving from his razor-sharp social comedies to his deeply soulful poetry and dark, philosophical fiction. Washington Square The bootk was originally published in 1880, is often cited as Henry Jamess most accessible masterpiece. Unlike his later, more complex "Late Phase" novels, this is a lean, sharp, and psychologically bruising story set in the aristocratic world of mid-19th-century New York City. It is a tragedy of manners that explores the collision between cold intellect and simple, honest emotion. Published in 1905, The House of Mirth is Edith Whartons savage and heartbreaking masterpiece of social climbing and social falling. Set in the Gilded Age of New York City, it is a "novel of manners" that quickly turns into a "novel of disaster." The title is a bit of dark irony, taken from Ecclesiastes 7:4: "The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth."
