ArtCraft FDC #1457 1972 8c Colonial American Craftsmen Silversmith ST676 USPS FDC #1457 1972 8c Colonial American Craftsmen: Silversmith ArtCraftU.S. #14578¢ SilversmithColonial Craftsmen IssueBicentennial Series Issue Date: July 4, 1972City: Williamsburg, VAQuantity: 50,472,500Printed By: Bureau of Engraving and PrintingPrinting Method: EngravedPerforations: 11 x 10 ½Color: Deep brown and dull yellow This stamp is part of a group of four se-tenant stamps issued as part of the American Revolution Bicentennial Series and depicts colonial craftsmen working at their trade. Glassblowing is regarded as the colonial craft (Jamestown, 1608). Silversmithing began in Boston in the 1600s, and wigmaking began domestically around 1700. In 1660, hatmaking began in Virginia. The hatter on this issue is rolling a beaver hat.The Peace BridgeIn the 1800s, ferries frequently crossed the Upper Niagara River between Fort Erie, Ontario, and Buffalo, New York. However, too many boats at once created a bottleneck and strong currents and ice made passage dangerous during several months of the year. The Railway Bridge opened in 1873 to make this route safer. But by the early 1900s, the Railway Bridge wasn’t enough, as it didn’t accommodate pedestrian or car crossing. In 1919, businessman Alonzo Clark Mather began to campaign for a new bridge that would not only increase traffic, but also commemorate a century of peace and cooperation between the two nations.Free ReturnsWe have free returns on domestic shipments for 30 days!
