These stamps were intended to cover the various rates in effect for both domestic and overseas airmail service. The 8¢ issue was required when postage rates were increased to help finance WW II. First Airmail Carried By Jet On June 22, 1946, US Airmail was carried by jet for the first time. The flight was planned as part of the 1946 General Electric Air Show.
