1940 first day cover for U.S. #866, the 3c James Russell Lowell issue from the Famous Americans Series (Poets), with top selvage. Canceled Cambridge, Mass., February 20, 1940, 9 AM, with a "First Day of Issue" machine cancel.Cachet: Purple engraved-style C. Stephen Anderson cachet (signed at lower left) of "Elmwood," Lowell's home in Cambridge, with a biography: "James Russell Lowell, Poet. Born Feb. 22, 1819 at Cambridge, Mass. Graduated from Harvard in 1838... first editor of Atlantic Monthly... served as U.S. Minister to Spain and to Great Britain... He died Aug. 12, 1891."Address: Rubber-stamped address to J. J. Klemann Jr., 68 Nassau Street, New York, N.Y.Condition: Faint purple ink mark at the top of the front and on the back flap. Pencil "20" at the lower right of the front. Stamp and cancel are clear.
