Item: Vintage 1952 Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) Hand-Carved Commemorative Presentation Plaque / Shield Base Unit: HMCS York (Toronto, Ontario) Artist/Carver: Signed by Ian Craig (Toronto) Date of Creation: May 9th, 1952 Recipient: Custom made for Petty Officer (P.O.) Edwards Up for sale is a remarkable piece of Canadian military folk art and trench craftsmanship. This authentic mid-century Royal Canadian Navy commemorative wooden presentation shield originates from HMCS York, the historic land establishment/reserve unit based on the Toronto waterfront. The front of the shield displays exquisite period iconography, featuring a central HMCS York crest (complete with naval crown and Tudor Rose), flanked by the year 1952 in bold relief. It is adorned with two RCN King’s Crown anchor badges and a central gold maple leaf. The lower banner commemorates a cross-border goodwill exchange, reading: "Presented to Chiefs & POs Rochester NY by Chiefs & POs Mess HMCS York Toronto."
