However, like all handheld line-of-sight line transceivers, its real-world performance varies drastically depending on the terrain.Knowing these real-world range breakdowns will help you accurately answer any questions from prospective eBay buyers:Real-World Range BreakdownUrban Environments (1/2 to 1.5 miles): High-density areas with concrete buildings, steel structures, and heavy interference will obstruct line-of-sight and reduce your range significantly.Suburban / Wooded Areas (2 to 3 miles): Moderate obstructions like houses, trees, and minor hills will offer decent mid-range performance.Open Fields / Flat Terrain (3 to 5 miles): Ideal line-of-sight conditions with minimal physical obstructions allow the radio to operate at its maximum stock potential.Mountain Peak to Valley (10+ miles): If transmitting from an elevated, completely unobstructed position down into a flat valley, the signal can travel much further than its advertised range.Maximizing the RangeBuyers often ask how to get better range out of these units. You can remind them that adding an aftermarket high-gain whip antenna (such as a Nagoya NA-771) or connecting the radio to an elevated home base station antenna will vastly improve reception and transmission distance compared to the stock rubber ducky antenna.
