This pair of square doilies is handcrafted to bring timeless European elegance to your home. Hand-embroidered in the iconic Kalocsa style, each features a pastel floral bouquet framed by a continuous Richelieu cutwork border. A rare handmade duo, these heirlooms are a beautiful testament to a vanishing Hungarian heritage.Personal story: This is one of nine pieces I sourced from a woman in Akasztó- a village near Kalocsa. It was hand-embroidered by her mother, Rozália, a local artisan who lived to the age of 86. More than a decor, owning this doily is an act of preservation, keeping the rare artistry of traditional Hungarian handwork alive in a machine-made world.Item ships from Hungary, please allow extra transit time. Combined shipping available for the European Collection. Consistent with their 50-year history, the textiles feature a soft, greyish-off-white tone—a natural patina of time. Authentic characteristics include small, scattered amber age spots (foxing) and faint surface marks, both hallmarks of genuine heritage. Cleaning vintage textiles require special methods- please research thoroughly if you wish to do this! History of Kalocsa: Originating in the 19th century as white-on-white "hole embroidery," Kalocsa textiles evolved into a "radiant garden" of vibrant wildflowers representing Hungarian regional pride. Today, this artistry is a vanishing heritage as mass-produced machine work increasingly replaces the soul and precision of authentic hand-stitching.
