Social History: Dating back to the 11th century, the fortress was intentionally blown up in 1672 by King-Stadtholder William III to prevent it from falling into the hands of the invading French army. This postcard documents its state during the post-WWII European regional tourism boom.Scene: The historic ruins of Valkenburg Castle (Kasteel Valkenburg) overlooking the town below in the southern province of Limburg. Valkenburg Castle is historically significant as the only castle in the Netherlands built on a hill.
