<p>A rendition/painting of the Afghan Girl, a photograph by photographer Steve McCurry and printed on the cover of the National Geographic in 1984</p><br /><p>Sharbat Gulas striking gaze is one of the most talked about subject of Steve McCurrys portrait. The National Geographic 1984 cover photo is forever iconized because her stare calls to our conscience from across the globe and across time. Through my painted rendition, I want to celebrate Gula as a heroine whose resilience inspires me. In the original photo, Gula is in a refugee camp where she is photographed with a vague green background. In the painting, I have incorporated gold icons on a light blue ground to elevate her portrait. The shock and fear in her gaze is the same and the impression she leaves on the viewer is also the same, that of strength and vulnerability. </p><br /><p>24” x 18” x 1" acrylic painting</p><br /><p>Love the item but not the price?
