There is a 24 picture limit on a listing so I can't shot obverse and reverse of all coins, and I know both are important for Buffalo nickels. I included pictures of the obverse of all of them and added reverses of some. If you'd like other pictures, I can oblidge. The Buffalo Nickel, also known as the Indian Head Nickel, is a five-cent coin that was minted by the United States from 1913 to 19381. Here are some key details about this iconic coin:DesignObverse (Front): Features a right-facing profile of a Native American. The design is a composite of three different Native American chiefs: Iron Tail, Two Moons, and a third whose identity remains uncertain1.Reverse (Back): Depicts an American bison, commonly referred to as a buffalo. The model for this design was a bison named Black Diamond, who lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York City1.DesignerThe coin was designed by James Earle Fraser, a renowned sculptor who aimed to create a design that was distinctly American1.CompositionThe coin is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel1.It has a mass of 5 grams and a diameter of 21.21 mm1.Mint MarksMint marks can be found under the words “FIVE CENTS” on the reverse side. Coins minted in Philadelphia have no mint mark, while those from Denver and San Francisco are marked with a “D” or “S” respectively1.Historical ContextThe Buffalo Nickel was part of a broader movement to beautify American coinage, which began in the early 20th century1.Despite its popularity, the coin had issues with wear and tear, particularly with the date wearing off easily1.It was eventually replaced by the Jefferson Nickel in 19381.Collectibility and ValueBuffalo Nickels are highly collectible, with values varying significantly based on their condition and rarity. For example, a 1913-S Type 2 Buffalo Nickel in good condition can be worth hundreds of dollars2.Key dates and mint marks, such as the 1918/7-D overdate and the 1937-D “three-legged” buffalo, are particularly sought after by collectors2.LegacyThe design of the Buffalo Nickel remains iconic and has been used on various commemorative coins and the American Buffalo gold bullion coin1.
