Offered here is a museum-quality E&L Instruments MMD-1 Mini-Micro Designer package — an exceptionally well-preserved, working Intel 8080-based microcomputer trainer from the earliest years of the microcomputer era. What separates this example from most surviving MMD-1 systems is the combination of:* Exceptional, near-new cosmetic condition* Working operation* Documented Grimes Division / Midland-Ross Corporation provenance* Original period shipping carton* MIT microprocessor training manuals* Original E&L documentation* Period electronic components and experiment materials* An unusually complete group of material that appears to have remained together for decadesThis is much more than a loose vintage computer. It is a remarkably intact historical package.Documented Grimes / Midland-Ross ProvenanceThe MMD-1 retains its original property identification reading:PROPERTY OFGRIMES DIVISIONMIDLAND-ROSS CORPORATIONThe identification plate is marked:S/N MMD-1-14I am describing this exactly as it appears on the Grimes property plate. I cannot confirm that “14” represents the 14th MMD-1 manufactured by E&L; it may instead have been an internal Grimes equipment or asset number as this unit was one of 14 it looks like they bought. The original carton also retains its period MIDLAND ROSS shipping label addressed to:Mr. Richard SmithGrimes DivisionMidland-Ross Corp.515 N. Russell St.Urbana, OH 43078The matching Grimes/Midland-Ross identification on both the computer and carton provides unusually strong provenance for an early microcomputer. Why the Grimes Connection MattersGrimes was an important American manufacturer of aircraft lighting and electrical equipment based in Urbana, Ohio. The company became part of Midland-Ross Corporation in 1977, placing this MMD-1 directly into the environment in which engineers were beginning to explore how microprocessors could be applied to electronic control, instrumentation, testing and other industrial applications. An MMD-1 would have been exactly the kind of system used for engineering education, microprocessor experimentation and hardware/software development during this period.I cannot document the exact project for which this particular unit was used, but its Grimes property identification and original Midland-Ross shipping material establish its corporate provenance and confirmed the name on the package belongs to a retired engineer from that company .The E&L MMD-1 Mini-Micro DesignerThe MMD-1 Mini-Micro Designer was developed during the pioneering years of microcomputing and was built around Intel’s 8080-family microprocessor.Rather than functioning simply as a conventional computer, the MMD-1 was designed as a complete microprocessor learning and development system. The machine integrates:* Microprocessor circuitry* RAM and ROM* Hexadecimal keyboard* LED displays and indicators* Input/output circuitry* Control circuitry* Large solderless breadboard area for circuit experimentationThis allowed students, engineers and researchers to write programs while simultaneously interfacing the processor with real electronic circuits.Systems such as the MMD-1 represent the period when microprocessors were transitioning from a new semiconductor technology into practical engineering tools.MIT Training ManualsAn especially significant part of this package is the collection of period Massachusetts Institute of Technology microprocessor training material.Included are materials from the:Center for Advanced Engineering StudyMassachusetts Institute of Technologyfor:Microprocessors: Fundamental Concepts and Applicationsby Christopher E. StrangioThe MIT material includes:* Study Guide* Laboratory Experiments* Additional Microprocessors: Fundamental Concepts and Applications materialThe manuals are marked:Center for Advanced Engineering StudyMassachusetts Institute of TechnologyCatalog No. 52-2100These are particularly appropriate companions to the MMD-1 because they document the kind of formal microprocessor education being provided to engineers during this period.Original E&L MMD-1 DocumentationAlso included is the original:MMD-1MINI-MICRO DESIGNERmanual from:E&L Instruments, IncorporatedDerby, ConnecticutThe manual visible in the photographs is marked:801-0082Rev. J5/79It also notes that portions were reprinted from the June 1976 issue of Radio-Electronics.That provides an excellent period reference for the machine and adds considerably to the completeness of the package.Exceptional ConditionThe computer itself is in outstanding cosmetic condition. It is difficult to overstate how clean this example is.The black upper panel is exceptionally well preserved with:* No notable scratches* No significant wear* Crisp white lettering* Clean switches and keyboard* Clean breadboard area* Excellent overall presentationIt has the appearance of a machine that was carefully stored rather than heavily used in a laboratory environment. For a roughly 45-50 year old engineering computer, the condition is remarkable. Please examine the photographs closely. They show the actual unit being offered.Tested and WorkingThe MMD-1 is working.A program has been entered into the computer that produces a chasing-light sequence across the LED display. The accompanying video shows the actual machine executing this program. This demonstrates basic processor operation and the system’s ability to accept and execute a program. Please see the video for the operating demonstration.Because this is approximately half-century-old electronic equipment, I cannot warrant every individual circuit, I/O function, breadboard connection or component, nor can future reliability of vintage electronics be guaranteed. It is being represented as working as demonstrated in the video.Included With the SaleThe sale includes the MMD-1 and the associated material shown in the photographs, including:* E&L Instruments MMD-1 Mini-Micro Designer* Grimes Division / Midland-Ross property identification* S/N MMD-1-14 identification on the Grimes plate* Original Midland-Ross shipping carton* Original carton label addressed to Richard Smith at Grimes Division* E&L MMD-1 Mini-Micro Designer manual* MIT Microprocessors: Fundamental Concepts and Applications materials* MIT Study Guide* MIT Laboratory Experiments manual* Period electronic experiment components* Radio Shack / Archer packaged electronic components* Operational amplifier ICs* Temperature sensor/current source IC* Seven-segment LED display* Additional loose ICs shown* Jumper/wiring materials* Other associated period components visible in the photographsEverything shown in the photographs is included.A Museum-Quality Early Microcomputer PackageMMD-1 systems are already difficult to find today. An example preserved in this condition is considerably more unusual.Finding one with:documented corporate provenance, its original company-marked carton,MIT engineering training manuals, original E&L documentation, period experiment components, and demonstrated working operationmakes this a particularly compelling survivor. This is the type of package that would be equally appropriate in a serious private collection, computer museum, engineering-history collection, aerospace technology collection or educational technology archive. It represents an extraordinary moment in computing history — when engineers were first learning how a microprocessor could be programmed, interfaced and incorporated into electronic systems. The Grimes/Midland-Ross provenance adds another layer to that story by connecting the machine directly with a major American aerospace-electronics manufacturer during precisely that period. Please review all photographs and the operating video carefully, as they are part of the description. This is a special piece, and it will be packed exceptionally carefully for shipment.
