Issue No. 23 of Evergreen Review, the literary journal edited and published by Barney Rosset of Grove Press. The centerpiece is Donovan Bess's extended report on the obscenity trials of Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer, which Rosset's own Grove Press had published in its first American edition the previous year, triggering prosecutions across the country. Also in this issue: "Standing on a Street Corner," a short play with drawings by Beat poet Gregory Corso; early fiction by Robert Coover; the poem "Now France" by Harold Norse; work by Charles Tomlinson, Joseph Barry, Li Yu, Hank Davis, and Michael Rumaker; and Martin Williams writing on John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. Cover photograph of François Mauriac by Henri Cartier-Bresson. A document of the moment when Grove and Evergreen were fighting the censorship battles that reshaped American publishing. This issue's Bess article covers the early trials. The better-known Hoke Norris piece "Cancer in Chicago" ran later, in No. 25 (July-August 1962). This info is from AI. Consult images for more accurate accounting of contents.
