A large-format illustrated volume on the English choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton (1904-1988), produced to mark his retirement as director and principal choreographer of the Royal Ballet. British theatrical photographer Zoë Dominic collaborated with journalist and playwright John Selwyn Gilbert, drawing on interviews with Ashton, his sister, and friends. The book traces his life and career from his determination to become a dancer after seeing Anna Pavlova perform through his development as dancer and then choreographer, richly illustrated with Dominic's photographs, many full-page and double-page, with pictorial endpapers and a portrait frontispiece. Includes a chronological catalogue, "Frederick Ashton: Ballets and Other Works, 1926-1970," listing more than 100 works in order of premiere with theatre, composer, designer, and cast details. A standard reference on Ashton, frequently cited in dance scholarship.
