This is an authentic, vintage cast iron lidded urn, model 269, produced by Virginia Metalcrafters in the 1940s. The piece features a classic Greek key (meander) pattern around the rim, a footed pedestal base, and an intricate lattice cutout dome lid with a top ring handle. The base is clearly stamped with "OVAL CACHEPOT," the official Virginia Metalcrafters maker's mark VM, and the model number 269. While "cachepot" is a French term meaning "to hide the pot," traditionally used to house unsightly plant pots, this specific lidded version is designed as a decorative vessel. The lattice-style, ventilated lid suggests it was intended for use as a potpourri burner, an elegant incense holder, or a sophisticated decorative display piece, rather than as a standard planter. The item features an aged, verdigris-style finish with natural patina and surface rust throughout, which adds to its authentic vintage character.
