A Bosou + Dambala Haitian vodou flag / drapo. 31" tall by 29.5" wide.The signed letters PO are an early signature of the famed flag maker Joseph Oldof Pierre. I have had this appraised by someone who knew Oldof personally. Their account:"I believe that your Bossou flag is made by the sequin artist Oldof Pierre. Note the initials P O. I knew Oldof well during the late 1980’s and I’m pretty sure this is one of his. The eyes of Bossou are very similar to the eyes Oldof made on most of his Lwa, and the colors and design of the flag is very similar. Originally Oldof’s work was somewhat different, but with the interest in the creative work of Antoine Oleyant in the late 1980’s, many of the other sequin artists, including Oldof, began to transition their designs to more closely copy Antione’s work. I believe this is one of Oldof’s “transitional” pieces."When I purchased this piece originally the backing was heavily decayed. I hired a local tailor to replace it, so it's less than a year old. The sequins are in excellent conditions, with very few missing.His art sells elsewhere for over $1000. For example: the Indigo Arts Gallery.Oldof was born 1955, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Oldof followed in the footsteps of his father as a practitioner of Vodou. According to Tina Girouard, he determined to become a houngan after being cured of a series of illnesses by his father's treatments. He actively pursued the sequin art from 1980, the year of his father's death, until his own untimely death in 1994. His work is published in Sequin Artists of Haiti (Girouard, 1994) and Sacred Arts of Haitian Vodou (Cosentino, 1995).
