Born out of their mutual childhood obsessions with ghosts, paranormal encounters, and Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride, the album was originally written to be the soundtrack for a theatrical monster-ghost love story play. When production costs for the stage show became too expensive, they shifted focus and turned the songs into a full album. Embracing a wonderfully haunting, spooky, "baroque-pop meets Halloween doo-wop" aesthetic, they imposed strict recording rules on themselves:1. They played all the instruments themselves, even learning entirely new instruments just for this record.2. No click tracks or electronic rhythm alignment were allowed.3. A maximum of three takes per song to let natural imperfections shine through. To complete the eerie, beautiful atmosphere, they collaborated with the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir (founded by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), providing the unforgettable, chilling backing vocals that make tracks like "Pa Pa Power" and "In the Room Where You Sleep" featured in various movies.
