The sun and moon symbolize the king and queen, the five peaks denote a mythical sacred place, and the entire composition declares the cosmic mandate of royal authority. The original silk paintings, painted in brilliant tang-chae (Tang colors) fixed with animal or fish glue, remain brilliant and waterfast - and only around twenty original screens survive today. The most prominent example is housed at the National Palace Museum of Korea. The image is so embedded in Korean identity that it appears on the obverse of the 10,000 won banknote, and was recently featured in multiple scenes of Netflix's 2025 animated film KPop Demon Hunters.
