Somebody sat in a bar with a Buddhist, an atheist coworker, and a friend who does yoga instead of church, and instead of preaching at them, he listened. Then he wrote it down. That's this book. Bryan Berghoef was a pastor in northern Michigan who started holding church in the pub, and what he found there wasn't a mission field, it was a conversation he'd been missing. The back cover puts it better than I can: a faith that seeks not to teach, but to learn. Not to speak, but to listen. Phyllis Tickle says he created something close to a manual. John Franke says to pull up a chair and order your favorite drink first. If you've ever left a service feeling like the interesting questions got skipped, this is the one that goes back and asks them, out loud, with strangers, over a beer. Trade paperback from Cascade Books, and the cover art alone earns its shelf space, a full-bleed close-up of amber beer with the foam line breaking across the top and bubbles the size of your thumb. The copy in my hands is clean and square, corners sharp, no creases along either edge. There are two used-bookstore stickers on the back cover that I've left in place rather than risk peeling paper. I haven't photographed the spine or the interior, so I'm not making claims about either. Ships within 2 business days, or free pickup in Gorham.
