Most gardening books tell you what to pour on your plants. This one tells you who lives underneath them. Lowenfels and Lewis make a straightforward argument: the dirt under your feet is not dirt at all. It's a working economy of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes and worms, all of them trading nutrients back and forth, and every bag of synthetic fertilizer you dump on top of it fires the whole staff. Feed the web instead and the web feeds the plants. That's the whole book, and it changes how you look at a garden bed permanently. The jacket promises rich, living soil without harmful synthetic chemicals, and Elaine Ingham — the soil biologist practically everyone in this field cites — wrote the foreword. The back is stacked with reviews from American Gardener, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Pacific Horticulture, one of which flatly predicts you'll wear the thing out from re-reading it. Fair warning: after this you will start defending your earthworms out loud at parties. Condition — hardcover in its dust jacket. The two photos are the front and back panels, and both are bright and glossy: no tears, no chipping, no fading, corners square, cover art sharp. I haven't shot the spine, the boards under the jacket, or the pages, so I'm not grading what I can't see — ask and I'll send more photos before you commit.
