Shomo Stern gets sent to the front with the Forced Labor Services — not to fight, to be worked to death. Russian winter. Impossible tasks. Battalions around him getting decimated while he survives on hunger, stubbornness, and a run of luck he had no right to. Then the rumors start. Trains packed full of Jews. Nobody comes back. Shomo decides that will not be him. What got me is the line on the back: he survived the long way to Auschwitz — but can he survive the horrors it hides? That is the whole book in one sentence, and it's a true one. Simon Haim Kohavi was born in Tel Aviv in 1948 to Holocaust survivor parents, and the man in this story is his own father. This is his first book. The cover is what stopped me on the shelf — a kid in suspenders and a flat cap, back turned, walking a snow road toward a smoking locomotive. You know where that train is going. He doesn't. Honest on condition: a trade paperback in very good shape. The front cover is clean and the corners are square. The matte black back has light handling scuffs — you can see them in the second photo, a streak and a couple of rubbed patches in the lamination. Surface only, nothing that touches the text.
