This cuff is giving me a little bit of Navajo and a little bit of Hopi, and since it is unsigned, I would rather be completely transparent than assign it to a maker or tribe without knowing its history.The wide, substantial sterling construction has the bold presence I associate with vintage Navajo silverwork, while the cut-out/overlay technique, darkened recessed areas, and strong geometric imagery are especially reminiscent of traditional Hopi overlay jewelry. Navajo silversmiths have also worked in overlay styles, which makes an unsigned piece like this particularly difficult to attribute from design alone.And honestly, the mystery is part of what I love about it.Look closely and the entire surface becomes a little landscape of its own—angular pathways, stepped forms, birds, mountains or mesas, and cloud-like borders, all worked into layers of silver.
