An authentic and beautifully preserved example of mid-Victorian mourning jewelry, dating to circa 1850–1880. This striking oval brooch features a smooth, opaque white milk glass base plate. In Victorian mourning custom, white materials were traditionally chosen to honor and memorialize a child or an unmarried young woman.Central Compartment & ArtistryAt the center of the milk glass base sits a raised, glass-covered bezel framing an intricately hand-woven, plaited sample of human hair. This delicate hair work served as an enduring personal keepsake and an intimate memento of a deceased loved one, a practice highly popularized by Queen Victoria's court.Frame & Backing ConstructionThe milk glass body is cradled within an ornate yellow-metal bezel frame decorated with classic Victorian scroll and scalloped border motifs. The backing retains its original period hardware, including a long, extended pin stem designed for thick garments, a traditional barrel tube hinge, and an open "C" clasp. Two central metal rivets run seamlessly through the milk glass base plate to secure the front hair compartment, confirming the brooch’s authentic 19th-century assembly.Specifications & ConditionEra: Victorian (Circa 1850–1880)Materials: Opaque white milk glass, yellow base metal (brass/pinchbeck), human hair, glass.Clasp Type: Extended pin with open "C" clasp and tube hinge.Condition: Excellent antique condition.
