Up for sale is a beautifully preserved, complete 4-volume set of The Story of the Bible (Library Edition), published in 1948 (MCMXLVIII) by Wm. H. Wise & Co., New York.This gorgeous mid-century set features an embossed geometric faux-leather binding and spans from Genesis to Revelation across four matching volumes. It features upwards of 1,200 illustrations in both color and monotone, including pristine frontispiece art plates by legendary artists such as Sir John Millais, Ford Madox Brown, and Philip H. Calderon.CONDITION REPORT:Bindings & Spines: Excellent structural integrity. All four volumes are tight, uniform, and square. The blind-stamped embossing is remarkably crisp with only minimal, expected shelf-wear to the corners and spine tips.Interior Pages: In very clean, excellent vintage condition. Pages lie flat with crisp edges and expected mild age-toning. No heavy foxing, no modern ink markings, and no torn or missing pages. The fragile tissue guards and full-color illustration plates are completely intact. BONUS MID-CENTURY PROVENANCE & HISTORICAL EPHEMERA INCLUDED:This set carries a wonderful piece of social history. It features an original owner stamp belonging to Francie S. Hilt, who was likely a dedicated Sunday school teacher in the mid-20th century.
