Highly collectible piece of mid-century Americana: 1953 McCoy "Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree" double pocket planter. This nostalgic piece features incredibly detailed molded relief imagery depicting a traditional blacksmith shop. A blacksmith works on an anvil near his stone cottage while a dark horse waits patiently inside a hitching stall adorned with a horseshoe detail. The reverse side opens up into two separate, spacious potting pockets.<br/><br/>Very small chip (picture #7) under the horse's back foot that can't be seen unless the planter is turned over. Some crazing due to age. Otherwise in great condition. Glossy finish and unfaded colors. Cold paint details are in great condition. Measures 7 1/2" long, 6 1/2" tall, and 3 3/4" wide. Raised "McCoy USA" hallmark cleanly molded onto the bottom of the piece.
