<p>1940 first day cover for U.S. #871, the 3c Charles W. Eliot issue from the Famous Americans Series (Educators). Canceled Cambridge, Mass., March 28, 1940, 9 AM, with a "First Day of Issue" machine cancel. Eliot served as president of Harvard for 40 years.</p><p><strong>Cachet:</strong> Purple oval portrait cachet with globe and books, "Famous American Educators – Charles William Eliot, 1834 – 1926."</p><p><strong>Address:</strong> Typed label to Laura Lavesque, Newton Centre, Mass.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Faint purple ink mark at the top of the front and a purple smudge on the back flap.
