Ventilator was the mid-1990s Los Angeles indie rock and psych-pop vehicle led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Matt Devine following his tenure in the acclaimed power-pop outfit Permanent Green Light. Released on CD in September 1996 via Chicago's Delmore Recordings, the 10-track Reseda Spleen stands as an inventive home-recording showcase, tracked with the "Ventilator Mobile Unit" (a Tascam 388 8-track recorder) between North Hollywood and Pomona before being mixed under the guidance of legendary producer Earle Mankey (Sparks, The Runaways, Concrete Blonde). Blending fuzzy power pop hooks, country-blues textures, and lo-fi psychedelia, the album features key contributions from notable figures of the '90s California alternative scene—including drums by Byron Reynolds (Possum Dixon), guest bass and mixing from shoegaze icon Brad Laner (Medicine), Hawaiian lap steel from Jeff Caruana, and an inspired interpretation of Skip Spence’s "Little Hands."
