ABOUT THE BRAND MU:DS — National Museum Goods of Korea MU:DS is the museum-goods brand of the National Museum Foundation of Korea, a body under the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Its designers take artifacts held in Korea's national museums and turn them into objects people actually use. For 2026 the foundation worked with Team Korea, the Korean national sports delegation, on a small collaboration range built around a single idea: the wishes carried inside old Korean objects, offered as encouragement to athletes. This keyring is the flag piece from that range. THE ARTIFACT The Denny Taegeukgi, c. 1890 Owen N. Denny, an American lawyer, served as foreign affairs adviser to King Gojong of Joseon from 1886. He argued in print that Korea was a sovereign state and not a dependency of Qing China, which cost him his post in 1890. He carried this flag home to the United States. Denny died childless in 1900, his relatives kept the flag, and in June 1981 William C. Ralston returned it to Korea. At 182 by 262 centimetres it is the oldest and largest surviving Korean national flag, and it was designated Treasure No. 2140 in 2021. One detail gives its age away: the hoist cord sits on the right, not the left, so the flag was raised from the side Koreans then read from first. Do not machine wash or tumble dry, as either will deform the padding. Keep it away from fire and sharp objects, and take care with colour transfer against dark clothing or bags.
