Antique Japanese-Style Cast Iron Tetsubin Kettle — Square Form — Maker’s Mark Unusual heavy cast iron kettle/tetsubin featuring a distinctive square-bodied form, tall fixed-style arched handle, round removable iron lid, elongated spout, and raised botanical/floral decoration. A two-character mark is present near the base of the spout. The characters appear possibly Japanese and may read 金寿 (Kinju/Kinjū); however, the maker, reading, origin, and period have not been independently authenticated, so this attribution is offered only as a possibility. Please examine the detailed close-up photographs and make your own determination. The kettle is remarkably heavy for its compact size, weighing approximately 3 lb 9.5 oz. Approximate Measurements Body height: 3.5 in Body width: approximately 4 in Overall height with handle raised: approximately 8 in Weight: 3 lb 9.5 oz Please refer to the measurement photographs for additional dimensions. Condition This is an old, heavily patinated cast iron piece showing considerable age and previous use. There is a visible crack near the spout/upper corner area, shown clearly in the close-up photographs. Additional condition characteristics include age-related oxidation, surface rust, patina, discoloration, scratches, wear, residue, and surface irregularities throughout. The interior also shows oxidation/rust and accumulated signs of age/use. The lines/seams visible elsewhere on the body appear to be part of the construction/casting; however, no professional inspection has been performed. The kettle has NOT been water tested or heat tested and is NOT being represented as watertight or suitable for preparing beverages. Sold AS-IS for collection, study, restoration, or display. Maker, exact age, period, and geographic origin have not been professionally authenticated. Any interpretation of the two-character mark is tentative.
