The Theory of Sound by Lord Rayleigh (John William Strutt, Baron Rayleigh) First American Edition — 1945 Volumes I & II Bound as One Dover Publications, New York Important classic work in acoustics and mathematical physics by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Lord Rayleigh. This Dover edition contains both volumes of Rayleigh’s The Theory of Sound in a single hardcover volume and includes a historical introduction by Robert Bruce Lindsay, Hazard Professor of Physics at Brown University. The copyright page identifies this copy as: • First Edition printed 1877 • Second Edition, revised and enlarged, 1894 • Reprinted 1926 and 1929 • First American Edition (Two volumes bound as one), 1945 • Special contents copyright 1945 by Dover Publications The book covers the mathematical and physical theory of sound, including vibration, normal modes, strings, acoustics, fluid motion, resonance, wave phenomena and related subjects. Numerous equations, diagrams and technical illustrations appear throughout. Condition: Vintage pre-owned condition. The blue cloth hardcover remains attractive and structurally presentable with light age and shelf wear. Pages have normal age-related toning. A previous owner’s name is written on the front endpaper. The original Dover dust jacket is present, which is a nice feature for a 1945 copy, but it has considerable age-related wear including tears, chips, edge loss, creasing, rubbing and discoloration. Please see photos for the exact jacket condition. No claim is made that the book is free from every small notation, mark or age-related imperfection.
