How many units to expect: normal variance in a lot

Lots are counted in bulk. How much variance is normal, and when a short or misgraded count becomes a claim.

Updated 2 Oct 2026.

Lots are counted in bulk, so the number of units that arrives can differ a little from the number listed.

Manifested lots

A manifested lot listed at 100 units may arrive with 95 to 100 units in the stated grade, and that is not a claim. Short or misgraded by more than 5 units is a claim for the units beyond the fifth.

Assortment lots

An assortment lot stated at about 100 units may arrive with 90 or more. With 89 or fewer, the claim is for the units beyond the tenth.

Count before the window closes Count every line against the manifest inside the 5-business-day acceptance window after delivery. Claims are filed per line, with photos and the quantity.

If your own carrier collected the lot, count claims are settled against what the driver counted and noted on the bill of lading at loading.
